WESTFIELDS Reserves have taken a big leap forward in the Hereford Times Herefordshire League Premier Division title race.
While they were taking maximum points from their two games their main rivals, Bromyard Town Reserves and Ewyas Harold were both missing out.
On Saturday, Fields made the short trip to The County Ground to face Lads Club, and after a struggle, came away 3-2 winners, despite finishing the game with 10 men.
Lads Club went in front midway through the first half, with Keith Jones starting the move and scoring the goal. Derek Craddock put Fields on level terms with a header.
Phil Glover put Westfields in front, but back came Lads Club to level the score with a back post header from Glen Warren. Carl Morgan was sent off, but then with five minutes remaining, Craddock belted the ball in off the crossbar to secure Westfields’ third win over their next-door neighbours in four weeks .
In midweek Westfields recorded a 4-2 home win over Ross Town, but once again, only after conceding the first goal. Glover cancelled out the opening goal, and then a brace from Lee Ferneyhough and another goal from Ben Osbourne, put them well clear at the break.
Ross scored again, but it turned out to be a consolation strike.
The crucial match between Bromyard Town Reserves and Ewyas Harold ended 0-0, with the stalemate chipping away at both side’s chances.
It turned out to be a poor week for Bromyard Reserves as they also suffered a surprise 5-2 home defeat at the hands of the inconsistent Ledbury Town Reserves.
Sutton United have virtually ended Woofferton’s chances of retaining the title when they scored an early goal and held on to win 1-0. The game was played at the Racecourse, a venue they are looking at as a possible home ground for next season.
Tim Rutherford scored the vital goal. The rest of the game was well-contested with the Woofferton keeper Dave Cooper making a number of fine saves.
Wellington Reserves saw their slim hopes of lifting the title dashed when they dropped two point in a 0-0 draw with visiting Hinton.
Kington Town picked a point up from a 1-1 draw with visiting Pegasus Reserves which was enough to lift them off the bottom of the table, albeit only on goal-differance.
Kington created a number of chances and might have won with something to spare. All they had to show for a spirited performance was a Jon Anning penalty, given when James Williams was brought down.
They also hit the woodwork and had efforts cleared off the line, but a strike from Dave Griffiths was enough to give the city side a share of the spoils.
Fownhope went down 3-2 at Ross Town.
