Pershore 21 pts Ledbury 23.

LEDBURY are still in with a chance of a third-place finish in Midlands 4 West South after a resolute win at higher-placed Pershore.

Ledbury took the lead through a Matt Anstey penalty but Pershore hit back with a converted try before two more Anstey penalties restored the visitors’ advantage.

Good play by Bruce Ruthven, Anstey and Olly Kaye sent Jamie Williams in to score near the posts and Anstey converted for a 16-7 half-time lead.

But two converted tries early in the second period saw the home side re-establish control as they made good use of the wind in their favour.

Ledbury knew they would have to dig deep to get anything from the game and did just that with Jack Wilesmith chasing his kick ahead to score in the corner.

Anstey’s superb kick sealed the win.

l Ledbury’s annual Sevens Tournament, on Sunday, May 3 is now to be known as The Three Counties Sevens.

Sides from Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire have been invited to compete for a prize pot of £1,000 for the winners and £500 for the runners up.

Running parallel with the senior tournament will be an under-16 event for sides from a slightly wider geographical area.

“The aim is to attract not only clubs from the area, but supporters and families,” said Ledbury RFC president John Wilesmith.

“The club was involved with both the Bethell Trophy and the Templar Trophy in the past which involved many local clubs, and we are looking to rekindle some of the ties that still exist between the clubs.”

There will be a barbecue throughout the day and live music provided by The Steve Kyle Band in the evening. Invitations have been extended to sides from Ross, Tewkesbury, Bromyard, Upton and Worcester.

Admission is £5 and under 11s are free. Family ticket £10.
