HEREFORD’S Richard Townsend helped his Hartpury College side to victory at Twickenham in the EDF Energy Intermediate Cup final.
The 19-year-old prop from Bartestree played more than an hour of Hartpury’s exciting 41-31 win over Clifton last Saturday.
“It was a very close final that went backwards and forwards, and it was 14-13 to Hartpury at half-time,” said Richard’s dad, Cliff.
“Richard made a couple of good carries with the ball before he was substituted with about 15 minutes to go.”
He added: “Hartpury didn’t play at their best, but it was a good win and Richard was delighted with his medal.”
The day was tinged with disappointment for the Townsends who are avid Gloucester fans.
Gloucester were thumped 50-12 by Cardiff Blues in a one-sided EDF Energy Cup final.
“We watched the Gloucester final with a few friends who, like us, are Gloucester fans,” said Cliff.
“Afterwards they said that Richard’s game had been much more exciting.”
Townsend was due back at Twickenham yesterday (Wednesday) with his Hartpury side.
Hartpury were taking on UWIC in the final of the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS).
