JOHN Trewick is relishing the chance to be Hereford United’s first new manager since 1995.
“There are of course details to be discussed, but I don’t see there being any problems in taking the job on,” said the 51-year-old.
“I am looking forward to it.
“I have been in the managerial seat (as caretaker at Derby County and West Bromwich Albion) before but it is different when you are the one the buck stops with.
“I don’t see much changing but I shall be the one who picks the team and who will have the final say now on some things which I have not had before.
“Graham is looking to step away from the cut and thrust of things but as director of football he will be there to support me and I shall try to use his experience.”
The former West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City and Newcastle midfielder has the advantage of knowing the club inside-out from his five seasons as Graham Turner’s chief coach but will now look to make his own impact in the hot-seat.
Until this season, Trewick had known little other than success during his time at Hereford.
His first two seasons brought a Conference runners-up spot, with a memorable victory over Halifax Town in the play-off final at Leicester City.
A season of consolidation in League 2 was followed by promotion in third place last season.
But Trewick will now have to act decisively in re-building a team which can help supporters erase the memories of this season’s depressing League 1 campaign.
l HEREFORD’S often bizarre and disappointing season took another farcical step when Yeovil goalkeeper Chris Weale came up to head an equaliser five minutes into injury-time in Tuesday night’s League 1 clash at Huish Park.
Weale, who played for Hereford in their win at Colchester earlier in the season during an injury-wrecked month’s loan, squared the scores at 2-2 with a superb header from Kieran Murtagh’s corner.
With 12 minutes to go, Hereford, who were leading 2-0, seemed well in control.
Jennison Myrie-Williams latched on to a cross from Steve Guinan to rifle the first past Weale in the 27th minute.
And Guinan himself collected a pass from Matt Done to crack in the second on the hour-mark.
This came just after Yeovil’s Andros Townsend had blazed a penalty high over the bar following a Sam Gwynne foul.
Peter Gulacsi had performed wonders in the Hereford goal to keep the scoresheet blank but was finally beaten by Luke Rodgers’ deflected shot 12 minutes from time.
And Weale’s final blow deprived United of what had looked like being their fourth away win of the season.
