CAPTAIN Matt Pritchard has led Hereford Rugby Club to a remarkable promotion that seemed impossible just two months ago.

The flanker was a major part in the Wyesiders’ outstanding 16-9 Midlands 2 play-off triumph at Scunthorpe on Saturday.

“I don’t think anyone could have imagined this about eight weeks ago,” said 24-year-old Pritchard. “We had written off our chances of promotion. I am proud of all the players because they have put in so much hard work.”

Hereford won their last eight league matches to clinch the runners-up spot in Midlands 2 West and secure the play-off clash.

They dominated the winner-takes-all promotion clash against Scunthorpe who had won 10 of their 11 home league matches.

Hereford coach John Watkins, said: “It was a huge task to win at Scunthorpe. The win was built on the defence which was amazing. The boys have worked hard over several seasons for this win.”

It was an important personal success for Pritchard who is unlikely to forget his first season as skipper.

“I started playing for the first team six years ago when we were in Midlands 2 West and we got relegated in my first year,” he said. “Ever since I started playing at Hereford we wanted to get back to where we thought we should be.”

It has taken the Wyesiders seven years to return to Level 5, which is known as Midlands 1.

Under RFU restructuring, however, the section is set to be re-named National 3 Midlands next season.

Hereford had earlier won promotion to Midlands 1 in 1988. They then had two spells in the National League before dropping back to Midlands 1 in 1997.

Hereford were relegated from Midlands 1 in 2002 but they have now achieved two promotions in three years.

Coach Mike Stubbs praised the commitment from the committee, the coaches and every player at Wyeside from their efforts.

Only 12 months ago, Hereford were thumped 43-13 by Hinckley in a Midlands 2 promotion play-off clash.

And Pritchard admitted his relief at hearing the final whistle at Scunthorpe last weekend.

“I was just hoping and praying that we wouldn't let our lead slip. When that final whistle went it was an overriding feeling of relief.”

Hereford can look forward to renewing their first-team rivalry with Luctonians. There will also be derby clashes with Malvern and Bromsgrove.
