LUCTONIANS director of rugby, Dave Thomas, would not bemoan handing over another fiver to Viv Wooley.

Thomas has been giving his coach a £5 win bonus throughout the season.

But that deal - which is from Thomas’ own pocket - will come to an end on Sunday.

Luctonians’ bid to retain the North Midlands Cup at Stourbridge is Wooley’s last game in charge of the Kingsland outfit.

“At the start of the season Viv said to me that he fancied his chances and liked to back himself. He asked me about a win bonus,” said Thomas.

“I told him that I would give him £5 every time we won this season. It’s a fun thing which has gone on throughout the season and I still owe him from the Kenilworth game.”

Wooley, a former Gloucester player and coach, led Luctonians to the Midlands 1 play-off in 2008.

He guided the Mortimer Park men to 15 league wins this term and third place. Luctonians missed out on the Midlands 1 play-off spot by points-difference.

Last season, Wooley steered Luctonians to a 20-3 win over Hereford in the North Midlands Cup final.

Thomas said: “Viv has been an expenses-only man. He fully committed himself to Luctonians for two years and is held in the highest regard at our club - we are all disappointed to lose him as head coach.”

Wooley became Luctonians’ first-team coach after a chance meeting with the former manager.

“Viv bumped into our former manager, Kenny Bemand, at a filling station in Bodenham,” said Thomas. “Under Viv we have gone from a side who survived relegation on the last day to a side vying for promotion.

“He’s changed his job in the last 12 months and has been finding it hard to get to Kingsland twice-a-week at 7pm for training.”

Gloucester-based Wooley, however, may not be leaving the Luctonians set-up altogether.

Wooley could become a mentor to the players and coaching staff at Luctonians.

Luctonians will meet Dudley Kingswinford in Sunday’s final, which kicks off at 3pm.

l Luctonians need a new first-team coach to work alongside backs’ coach Richard Henwood.
