STEVE Guinan, who picked up Hereford United’s player-of-the-year award before the final League 1 match with MK Dons, was way out in front at the head of the Bulls’ goalscoring charts.
The 33-year-old found the net 15 times, a total only matched by adding together the tallies of the next five on the list with Febian Brandy’s four goals coming in second place in the chart.
Heading the appearance list was midfielder Toumani Diagouraga, who was absent on only one occasion, closely followed by Guinan and Richard Rose who were, respectively, missing just three and four times.
Hereford’s dismal campaign goes down as one of the worst in their 85-year history.
The 30 defeats they suffered eclipses the previous worst of 27, when they propped up the Football League in 1982-3.
Their 79 goals conceded matches the worst they have ever suffered, equalling the 1993-4 campaign, while their 42 goals scored is also the worst since 1982-3.
It is cold comfort that United have scored fewer goals in a season on three occasions, the worst being 34 in 1977-8.
The 13 home defeats suffered sets another record, beating the 12 home reverses by Ian Bowyer’s Welsh Cup-winning side in 1989-90.
The 17 away defeats tally is, however, not quite the worst, with 18 having been suffered in United’s last foray into the third tier of English football in 1977-8.
The figure of nine victories overall is also the worst since 1977-8, although only eight were achieved in 1976-7 from the 42-game Division 2 programme.
The negative goal difference of -37 also matches the worst ever in 1982-3.
