HEREFORD United season-ticket holder Shane Roberts has reached the quarter-finals of the popular Channel 4 television programme, Countdown.

Roberts, who was brought up in Leominster and educated in the town, wore a black Hereford United polo shirt for the filming of his quarter-final tie.

The 46-year-old’s mum still lives in Leominster and his sister, Karen, lives in Shobdon.

“Everybody was very helpful and friendly on the show,” said Roberts, who wrote for United’s fanzine Talking Bull under the name of Old Rosie.

“It was a fantastic experience and I would recommend it to other people. They film five episodes in one day. It’s a full day from 9.30am to 6.30pm.

“I had been thinking about going on Countdown for a while. At work, I calculate medicine dosages in my head and I have always had a head for figures.”

Roberts, who lives in Bristol and works as a staff nurse, booked his place in the last-eight of the series after winning eight successive games.

He also wore his United polo shirt in his first and eighth appearances on the show.

Countdown was not Roberts’ first television quiz appearance.

Roberts was a contestant nine years ago on Fifteen to One, a popular general knowledge quiz show broadcast on Channel 4.

The Leominster man was once stopped from playing on two quiz machines at Southend Pier because he was winning too much money.

Roberts says he is keeping tight-lipped about the outcome of his quarter-final appearance on Countdown.

“Some people have asked me about it, but I have made it clear that I won’t be saying anything,” he said. “If I let people know the result, it will spoil things.”

Shane Roberts’ quarter-final tie on Countdown is being screened on Channel 4 on Tuesday, June 16 at 3.25pm.
