PRE-season has gone very quickly because of the amount of work we have put in over the last four or five weeks.
We have had a decent pre-season and recruited a squad which will be very capable in this division but I believe that, on paper, we do have a very tough first month.
We are going to give it a real good go and I am confident that, going into the Crewe game, I have the right players to get the right result.
I am ambitious and my overall aim would be to win the league – there is no manager in the whole of the Football League who would say that they did not want to win their division.
Realistically, however, I want to compete, aim to win every game and see where that takes us – hopefully it will take us into a top 10 position and pushing for the play-offs.
I am pleased with the way that the pre-season has gone.
When I took over, we only had six players so I knew that pre-season would be very important.
Recruitment was the first thing I had to do then you have to get your team gelling together; get your fitness work in.
We have, at the time of writing, got 18 players; we’ve won five and lost two of our seven games but the games we lost were to teams from a division higher than us and we gave a good account of ourselves in those games as well.
And our fitness levels are up where they should be.
It would not really have bothered me if we had lost all of our games as long as we are prepared for Saturday, at Crewe, which is where we earn our money.
But in terms of the winning mentality, which we are trying to create within the club, we have had the results to move us along that way.
My favoured way of playing is going to be 4-3-3 but we can tweak that slightly.
We shall have a squad of 20 players but we have plenty of adaptability within it which is important when you are going to go with that sort of system.
I am trying to create a style of play at the club whereby we do not have to drastically change the whole system if one or two of the players are not available.
I am confident about Saturday and I am looking forward to it.
Only time will tell how the season will go; other clubs will have the same aspirations as us but we will give it 100%; we will make sure that the players are prepared right and the planning is done ready for each fixture.
And we will aim to be in every game to try and win it.
