LACK of discipline cost us on Saturday when we lost Kenny Lunt for two bookable offences.
I am certain that had we had 11 men on the pitch to finish the game then we would have won.
It is something that you have to look at; what you do with the players and their discipline around the training ground has to be carried on to the pitch.
But we do not want to take the aggression and the competitiveness out of the club.
When you have lost a few games on the bounce, everyone wants to succeed and play on that knife-edge and so it is inevitable that you are going to give free-kicks away.
Over the last couple of games, we have given free-kicks away and it has cost us some bookings but sometimes we have to look at referees as well.
We have had two bookings this season for dissent; that should never happen but the other bookings have been for tackles.
I’m not going to stop my players tackling.
We just have to make sure that we are a bit more sensible and professional – Kenny Lunt on Saturday, on a booking, went sliding into a tackle and if you mis-time it then you’re off.
Unfortunately, he mis-timed it, that’s what has cost us and we have to make sure that it does not happen too often.
On Saturday, we knew before the game that the referee was going to be a stickler for yellow and red cards.
But we were away from home and we had to compete. You cannot tell players just to be careful and watch their tackles; you are there to compete and players have to make their decisions about whether they can win the ball.
We’ve ended our losing run with a point but it might have been more – Bury is always a difficult place to go to but the belief in the camp is really high that we can turn things around and get points on the board.
We got that elusive goal when Guillem Bauza coolly slotted away the penalty.
It was nice to see a striker with the confidence to step up and take a penalty on his debut.
Confidence is a massive word for strikers.
They live and die by the goals they score and the chances they convert – unfortunately, over the previous six games, our strikers were getting in the right areas and getting chances but not converting them.
Their confidence was starting to get a bit low but Bauza’s confidence and belief in his own ability will, perhaps, take a bit of the pressure off the rest of them and we can see a more free-flowing, confident strike force.
Now, with two home games coming, we have to be looking for six points and we have the players who can achieve that.
I have the same belief in these players that I had when I brought them in during pre-season. And I will do all through the season.
They are a good group, they just need help, support and time to gel.
