I have been in the job now for almost six months and it has been very enjoyable.
I have enjoyed working with the players, getting out there every day and testing my abilities with what I am trying to get out of the side and my knowledge within football.
Of course, there have been tough times as well as the good times but that is the nature of football and you just have to get on with it.
When I came into the job, I tried to make sure that I would be as approachable, honest and trustworthy as I could with the players and the staff, to give them as much confidence and belief as possible.
But sometimes that is simply not possible because of situations that arise.
I cannot always be the person that I probably am away from football; the person that people can come to, the ‘I’ll do anything for anyone’ type of person.
Sometimes, I have had to be ruthless and make tough decisions because, ultimately, my job is to make sure that this football club is in a good position come the end of the season.
There have been plenty of frustrations along the way. The biggest has been that we have found ourselves constantly in the mix and never able to kick on from that because we have not won enough home games.
We have never been able to get any momentum going which is disappointing because we could have been comfortably in mid-table rather than, once again, looking over our shoulders.
I have found everyone in football to be very respectful – of course, I have some contacts in the game that I tended to use a little more than others but whenever I have had to pick up the phone and ask for something, generally people have been very helpful and honest.
As staff, none of us are shy to ask the questions and, hopefully, if you ask the questions then you tend to get what you are asking for and people respect you for it.
I have people around me with good experience and contacts within the game.
Russell Hoult has been in football for a long period at the highest level; he has good contacts and we work together on that.
Dave Kevan has also been in the game for a very long time.
I have been to games with Dave where everyone seems to know him and that is a great asset because, between us, we have enough contacts within football to ensure that we can really go ahead and build something here.
In the next six weeks, there is certainly going to be plenty of pressure.
But the pressure has constantly been there because we have always been in and around the relegation places.
We have gone into games where, with the right result, we could really have kicked on but failed to deliver.
We have tried not to put pressure on the players but they have to take some responsibility themselves to make sure that we do kick on.
Last weekend, we got lucky with other results and, to some extent, got away with our loss at Southend.
We were disappointing at Southend for most of the second half and we collapsed, which was extremely frustrating.
As a side, that is not acceptable.
We have to have better mental resolve and, as a management team, we have to take some responsibility for that, too.
There are enough games left.
We just need to make sure we get as many wins as we can on the board as soon as possible.
We are going into another tough spell of games and we need to show again the sort of form we were showing until recently.
