LAST week was traumatic around the club with three points being deducted from our total.
We felt that we had almost got to the position we needed for safety and the deduction was, of course, a blow to that.
But the players responded really well – not one of them complained or kicked up a stink.
They just came in on Thursday and worked really hard, as they had through the week.
And the response was great at the game on Saturday.
That was a result which had been coming for a few weeks.
We have had the potential to do that and have found a system which suits us and the personnel that we have got.
We could have won any one of the previous games against Port Vale, Gillingham and Wycombe and so it has been a really positive reaction to something which could have been devastating.
Chesterfield are the league leaders, and they are the leaders by 10 points so they are obviously a decent side.
They have been consistently good over the course of the season.
But, when I met the Wycombe manager Garry Waddock after the game last Tuesday he said that he felt we are a top-four side.
I really think we have got something going here. We have a great spirit amongst the players and we have taken that into the game against Chesterfield where, had we lost, it could have really piled the pressure on us.
When Barnet, Burton, Northampton or Lincoln saw that result they must have thought that we are really flying.
But we’re still looking to hit that 50-point mark.
When you reach 50 points you really hope that you are going to be safe.
It might need to be more if everyone goes on a great run but, out of seven or eight teams, you cannot see everyone doing that.
We just have to make sure that we are the team that does kick on and get enough points to see us safe.
We believe that, this season, we have created a great atmosphere and that was something that I always believed in when I was a player.
A good atmosphere gives you a great chance of being successful.
These players have been professional, hard-working and have really pulled up trees to get us where we are.
They have taken everything that has been thrown at them in their stride and deserve a lot of credit for that.
I’m really proud and grateful that a group of supporters have set up a testimonial for me.
I have had a great time at this club which has formed a major part of my life and I seem to have every job here.
But I’m really pleased that they think I amworth it and I hope it will be a success.
We have a golf day planned and we are having a dinner.
The big one, though, is to hopefully get a decent side down at Edgar Street for a testimonial game which should be during the pre-season.
There will also be events during the rest of the year and we will be looking for as much support as possible for these.
So there is still plenty to look forward to after the end of the season when we have, hopefully, secured our league status.
Then I shall be hoping, with Dave Kevan and Russell Hoult, to build a squad which can play some nice football and do things right next year.
