THE system that we have been playing is one that I would define as 4-5-1 when we don’t have the ball and 4-3-3 when we do.
It was very successful for us last season when we needed to get results to stay in the League and, with the players we have, it has suited us this year, too.
That may change in the next few weeks but we have had some good performances and some good results from it.
Steven Leslie and Tom Barkhuizen, who are attackminded players, don’t have to worry so much about defending as they might in a 4-4-2.
And three in the centre of midfield gives Harry Pell the chance to push on, too.
We have to look at the players we have and their attributes and work a system around them.
That is what we have done and we will have to readjust that if we decide to switch to, even, a 4-2-4 system with two front-men.
That is something we are going to look at in the next few weeks.
We have plenty of options in the squad and they have all really responded well in training.
The players have worked hard to take on board what we are doing and training has been really intense.
So we hope that last Saturday’s match will not have proved too much of a killer blow after losing so late in the game.
We have to focus on the positives because it was a good performance.
We will watch the DVD of the match, keep analysing and look at the good things which came out of it and work on those.
We also have to look at the weaknesses and work out whether we did the right things in the last six minutes to see the game out.
Probably the answer to that question is that we didn’t so we, and particularly the younger players, will have to learn from that as well.
Training has not changed a great deal over the last few weeks.
We have a technical side to it, a game-related side and the players who are not playing at the moment get some fitness work.
We do things with individuals, such as delivery and finishing, so that everyone does something technical related to their game.
The difficulty is that we have to train elsewhere so we come to the ground to change and eat.
What we have to do is come up with a system where, maybe two or three times in a week, we work twice a day.
When you can drive into a training facility which has everything there and you can go back out in the afternoon, things become a lot easier.
We have to ensure that our players, especially the younger ones, get that technical support to their game so that they will improve and we can, hopefully, sell one on.
That might help us to buy a new training venue!
Our trip to Crewe this Saturday brings back memories of the start of last season.
Since then, the club has moved forward off the field in a lot of respects; the supporters club is getting re-built and we are reaching out to the community and trying to bring them into the football club.
On the field, there have been changes of staff and a turnaround in players.
Now we need to get through this season and really sit down and assess where we are in the football aspect of it for next season.
We need to make sure that we get in exactly what we want within the realms of our budget.
