PHIL Green returned to Hereford Municipal Club as Ross-on-Wye champion and partnered Manu Bonnel to add the Hyde Shield to his trophy collection.

The duo received 13 shots in the foursomes competition and returned a nett 67, three shots clear of runners-up Mike Watson and Dean Samuel, 15 received, who beat Terry Robinson and Chris Wearmouth, 14, on countback.

Club captain Colin Morgan and Shaun Vivian had a good front nine before a wayward shot disturbed a wasps' nest in the bushes and brought a painful end to their hopes.

Leominster club juniors did well in the October medal with James Duggan and Joe Lines winning their divisions and Andrew Pearson performing creditably in his first senior competition.

Neil Williams won the Belmont Trophy stableford with 43 points when there was a close battle for the secondary places.

Richard Williams was runner-up with 41 points, while Jim Morgan pipped Des Davies on countback for third after both finished on 40.

There was also a close finish to the President's Bowl with James Pritchard winning on a countback with Tristan Dodd.

Ray Evans won the Pennell All Winners Cup at Kington with 78-12-66.

The Seniors' Summer League went to the wire and beyond before Terry Inskip was acclaimed champion.

The players' best six scores from eight rounds counted but that left a tie between Inskip and Andy Edey on 223 points. So a seventh score was added to decide the winner and the title went to Inskip.

Third was Joe James with 219 points and John H Williams was fourth with 212.

Williams was, however, the winner of the Born Too Soon Cup, beating Arthur Thompson in the final of the knockout competition.

The Lee Cup at Herefordshire GC - for winners and runners-up of the previous 12 months - was won by Rob Morgan with 77-15-62, followed by Barry Stevenson, 75-9-66, and Mark Reeve, 81-14-67.

Herefordshire A beat Burghill Valley B in the Hargrove Trophy match postponed from the previous week.

The Herefordshire winners were Neil Greening and Ben Synnock, six up, and John McQuillan and Jonathan Devereux, one up. Paul and Josh Mallender won four up for Burghill.

Fourteen-handicapper Kevin Baylis accumulated 42 stableford points to win Herefordshire Seniors' Frank Cox Award.

Mike Ellis scored a record 149 points from his best three rounds of six to win Ross-on-Wye Seniors' Layton Cup.

Twenty-one veterans braved heavy showers to compete for the Over-75s Cup which was won by Bill Castle after a countback.

The presentations were made by Peter Carton-Kelly who initiated the event in 2001.

Castle collected another cup on the same day after recording the best score of the day - 34 points - to help Vaga beat Kyrle for the fifth time out of six in the annual match between the Probus clubs.

Junior member Rhys Annett won Cradoc Rorke's Drift Stableford Trophy with 41 points and his 24 handicap will be cut after an excellent round.

Leominster's Phil Lawrenson was the best placed Herefordshire golfer when he finished second in the Shropshire & Herefordshire Captains' Society's autumn meeting at Market Drayton.
