Hereford United 1 Shrewsbury Town 2 HEREFORD made their exit from the Johnstone's Paints Trophy at the first hurdle against their local rivals at Edgar Street.
The Bulls have made it through to the area semi-finals of the competition in the last two seasons but two Michael Symes goals ensured that there would be no repeat this time.
Hereford took the opportunity to give some of their fringe players an outing with first-team full debuts for Glyn Thompson and Luke Webb and recalls for Alan Connell, Andy Ferrell and Tim Sills.
But despite the freshened up lineup it was Town who went ahead through Symes on 22 minutes.
The Shrewsbury striker extended the lead on 77 minutes following a corner to put the game out of Hereford's reach.
Although substitute Andy Williams reduced arrears two minutes later when he seized on a Rob Purdie pass, by then it was already too late.
