WESTFIELDS began the defence of their Hereford Times Herefordshire League Journal Cup with a comfortable 5-0 away win at Bartestree in a first round tie.

Bartestree held out for 20 minutes before Roger Chapman scrambled the ball home from a Paul Jones corner to give the visitors the lead. Chapman then headed home from close range when Paul Burnham whipped over a cross to put Westfields in control 10 minutes later.

Zibi Noswicki and Wes Owen had chances to increase the tally but failed to beat the home keeper. Bartestree started the second half positively and it needed a fine save from Rory Hollingshead to prevent Langford scoring from a free kick.

The contest was over when Jones had a hand in two more goals, forcing the home keeper to palm into his own net from a corner for the first and then beating him with a penalty when Noswicki was fouled. The keeper had earlier denied Chapman a hat-trick by saving his penalty, but was beaten again later on by substitute Jon Williams.

Leominster Town played well throughout to record their first win of the season, beating visiting Pegasus 4-1 at Bridge Street Sports Centre to progress into round two.

Lee Langford scored the only goal of a well-contested first half when he tapped the ball home after the chance had been laid on by the combined efforts of Jason Evans and Dan Stack. Evans and Stack combined again in the second half, with the latter slipping in the second at the near post.

Evans scored the third from the penalty spot after Richie Callow was harshly adjudged to have fouled Stack and then Stack grabbed his second goal when he stabbed home a Richard Legdon cross.

The visitors played their part in an open game and scored a late consolation goal, Cory Hyde laying on the chance for Steve Brotherwood to finish.

Sutton United played some good football to eliminate the current Premier Division leaders Woofferton 3-0.

They were in control for much of the match and took the lead with a picture goal in the latter stages of the first half. Danny Hill ran on to a through ball, drew the keeper and then beat him with a delicate chip.

Lee Ferneyhough netted with a rare header at a corner to score the second and then Stuart New drove in the third from the edge of the box to fire Sutton into the next round.

Lads Club enjoyed a rare win when they eliminated Ledbury Town Reserves 3-1 on Widemarsh Common.

Ledbury started well against the young and inexperienced home team but fell behind after a quarter of an hour, Mike Olive netting from close-range after good build-up play. Ledbury went in all square at the break after equalising in the latter stages of the half with a header.

Ben Arnold restored the Lads Club lead midway through the second half and Josh Pugh gave them a cushion when he converted a penalty five minutes later, after Matt Skinner had been brought down by the Ledbury keeper.

Lads Club held on with debutant Luke Darlington frequently catching the eye.

Colwall fought back well after making a sloppy start to the game but eventually went down 4-3 at home to Wellington Rangers.

Nick Panniers netted twice during the first quarter as the visitors struggled to get going. After a few choice words they bucked their ideas up and hauled themselves level. Tim Rutherford got his head to a corner to score the first and then Jamie Gladwin fired in the equaliser from the edge of the box.

Eddy Murphy struck late in the half to send Rangers in 3-2 up at the break. Rutherford ran through to tie the score again in the second half. With time running out Kenny Styles secured the winner for the visitors.

Ewyas Harold ran out 4-1 winners at Kington Town.

Kington competed well for 20 minutes before conceding three goals before the break. They looked comfortable at the start of the second half until their keeper was punished for a weak clearance.

Kington did score a consolation goal, Steve Mifflin firing in from the penalty spot.

Bromyard Town Reserves also made it through to the next round with a 3-1 home win over Fownhope.
