LEOMINSTER’S Liz Ranft continued her hot goalscoring streak with a brace in a 2-1 win against West Clubs’ Women’s League Severn Division 1 champions Hereford at the Racecourse.

It looked as if it might be business as usual for Hereford when Emily Tompkins opened the scoring for the home side with her almost obligatory goal.

But Leominster, unbeaten in the calendar year, stepped up their game and enjoyed long spells of possession up to the half-time interval.

After the break a well-executed short corner saw Carolyne Hughes set up striker Ranft for the equalising goal.

And Leominster continued to threaten with Kate Holder having an influential game in midfield frequently feeding the ball forward to Karen Hackley and Niomi Cowling.

But the Hereford forwards were still also posing a threat and brought a couple of decent saves from Julie Nicholas in the Leominster goal.

A one-on-one confrontation between Nicholls and the advancing Tompkins resulted in the free scoring forward lying flat out on the pitch and dazed.

But it was the visiting team which launched a concerted spell of pressure and Hackley set up the predatory Ranft to complete her double with a comfortable finish from inside the D.

Leominster, by inflicting the second defeat of Hereford’s memorable season, leapfrogged Hereford 2nd into third place in the league behind Cirencester. Their improved form since Christmas might have resulted in an even better position without the loss of six points from two unfulfilled fixtures.

IN the N4 Financial Solutions West of England and South Wales League Herefords and Glos 2, Ross 2nd completed their fixtures with a 16th defeat of the season when they went down 5-3 at Winchcombe.

The team sometimes had an unsettled look to it with several players being promoted into the firsts and the result was a 10th-out-of-12 finishing position in the table.

In their latest defeat, James Adamson created all of his side’s goals which were scored by Matt Sanders, Willem Hagaan and Andy Cross.
