KINGSLAND Hockey Club gave a superb account of themselves to finish runners-up in the Under-11 West of England Hockey Tournament at Millfield.
The north Herefordshire side secured five victories against strong opposition and came just one point behind the winners, Devon.
Ian Johnson coached the Kingsland side who represented Herefordshire and remained unbeaten throughout the Somerset event.
With a squad of just nine players, Kingsland beat opponents from Avon, Cornwall, Dorset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.
Kingsland shared a goalless draw with last year’s winners Somerset and were held to a 1-1 draw by this year’s champions, Devon.
In fact, Kingsland were denied the title by an excellent diving save and a late goal-line clearance from an under-seige Devon defence.
Hard work from Ellie Leney and strong defending from goalkeeper Liam Hill, Jonty Goodey and James Rowsell gave a good platform for Barney Morgan and Dan Petrie.
Petrie was Kingsland’s leading scorer with four goals, while Morgan (3), Philip Entwhistle, Simon Lyke and Dan Evans also found the net.
