A HEREFORDSHIRE boxers is preparing to take a ‘David versus Goliath’ battle against a boxer three weights above his normal fighting weight.

Having won the Midlands Super Middleweight title in late November, Hereford’s Liam O’Hare was scheduled to fight Tom Brennan for the vacant Midland Middleweight title in Swindon on June 1.

However, the fight did not go ahead after Brennan pulled out at the last minute and the title opportunity was lost for now.

But in true fighting style, another fight was arranged at short notice and this one promises to be a tough challenge for the Hereford man.

O’Hare takes on the 32-year-old, 6ft 4in, aptly named ‘Big Ben’ Thomas from Bolton at light heavyweight.

It is a real David versus Goliath clash where our man will be seeking to beat a boxer three weights above his normal fighting weight.

The fight is on Sunday, June 23, at the Excelsior Sporting Club, Premier Suite, Cannock.

Doors open at noon with boxing starting at 2pm. It is a not to be missed event where O’Hare, 27, again tops the bill.

“I was all set to win a second Midland title in Swindon on June 1, so was very disappointed for my fans when my opponent pulled out at the last minute,” said O’Hare.

“So I was determined to get an alternative bout at short notice. Now I’m 100 per cent focused on defending my undefeated record against a much bgger opponent.

“It will be a big test of my progress and things are coming together well in training.

“I feel that winning this fight will help prove my boxing credentials and spirit for the bigger title fights to come.”

It promises to be quite a contest, if you want to see O’Hare in this David vs Goliath bout you can purchase a ticket on http//teamohare.co.uk/fight-tickets.  There is free transport to the event from Hereford.

O’Hare currently has a 8-0 professional record with his last victory coming against Mike Byles in March.

The Hereford fighter has already claimed the Midlands super-middleweight crown in his short career.

Not many boxers have a ballet background and O’Hare performed a pirouette for fans after overcoming Byles.

“He’s a weapon!” O’Hare acknowledged afterwards talking about his opponent Byles. “I wasn’t really happy. I did what I was told to do from the first to the fourth.

“After that I didn’t stick to the game plan and, at this stage, it’s all about sticking to the game plan. I should’ve thrown more uppercuts."
